in 1802 to hold French prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars, Dartmoor
Prison lies in the historic moorlands of southwestern England.
The region?s rugged beauty results from a dramatic combination of
granite outcroppings, heather covered slopes, grassy lowlands, and
tracts of dark peat and dangorus bogs.
The wild terrain of Dartmoor is vividly evoked in Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902).
The region is also the site of several prehistoric building
remains and Druidic settlements.
