Medieval places of interest, Houses of Parliament

The Houses of Parliament, also known as The Palace of Westminster, is not only the home of the UK Parliament, it is also a royal palace and former residence of great kings.

This impressive Gothic Palace was built in the late 19th century by Sir Charles Barry to replace the original ancient buildings, which were almost completely destroyed by fire in 1834.

The layout of the Palace is a marvel, with its existing buildings containing nearly 1,200 rooms, 100 staircases and well over 3 kilometres (2 miles) of passages.

The Palace comprises many famous sites including the green coloured House of Commons Chamber and the red coloured House of Lords Chamber where all political decisions are made to this day. It also includes the famous Clock Tower Big Ben.
