Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King's horses, And all the King's men,
Couldn't put Humpty together again!
During
the English Civil War, The city of Colchester was a walled town, in that town
next to St Mary's Church, stood a large cannon called said to be called Humpty Dumpty.
However on
July 14th 1648 The Royalist fort within the walls at St Mary's
church is blown to pieces and their main cannon Humpty Dumpty is
destroyed.
A shot from a Parliamentary canon succeeded in damaging the wall beneath Humpty
Dumpty which caused the canon to tumble to the ground.
The Royalists (all the King's men) tried to raise Humpty Dumpty onto another
wall, but failed because of its size. Colchester fell to the Parliamentarians
after a siege lasting eleven weeks. However, whilst it makes a good story, there is no proof of this.
Thompson, a one eyed gunner, had placed himself and his saker (a small
cannon) on top of the tower and was causing considerable damage to Lord
Fairfax's attacking forces.
This brought a concentration of Roundhead fire onto
the church, whereupon, eventually, Thompson and his gun, came tumbling down
